Reuse of data from environmental impact assessments

In the context of environmental impact assessments (EIA), large amounts of information and data on the environment and society are being produced. For example, it may include inventories of species and natural environments, hydrological or oceanographic data, cultural environment data, land use, fishing, shipping and other activities.

This data is primarily collected to assess the consequences of a particular planned activity. However, much of the data could also be valuable long after the original environmental impact assessment is completed – for example in research, planning and government work, in new environmental assessments or to follow changes in the environment over time.

How can EIA data be easier to reuse?

Within Mistra Co-Creating Better Blue (C2B2), we examine how data and information produced in the context of environmental impact assessments may be easier to find, access to and reuse.

One idea we are investigating is whether a common database or directory where it is possible to find out which data has been developed in different EIA processes, what they contain, what conditions apply to reuse and how to access them could be a realistic solution.

Tell us about your experiences and needs

As part of the work, we are conducting a short survey. We would like to receive answers both from those of you who have already reused data or information from an EIA and from those of you who have not done so but believe that such data could be useful in your work.

You do not have to work on developing environmental impact assessments to participate.

In the survey, we ask, among other things, what types of EIA data may be relevant, what they can be used for and – for people who already have experience in reuse – what obstacles were encountered.

The survey responses are anonymous. The survey is open to the end of October 2026.

Participate in a workshop

We also plan a workshop where we, together with researchers, officials and other interested parties, want to discuss experiences, needs and possible ways forward to make data from environmental impact assessments more accessible and reusable.

The expression of interest is separate from the survey. Contact-information provided for the workshop cannot be linked to your survey responses.

About the project

The work is carried out within Mistra Co-Creating Better Blue (C2B2). The project examines how better data access and reuse can contribute to future research, planning, environmental assessment and other activities.
